Gairloch Museum – Winner of Art Fund Museum of the Year 2020

Gairloch Museum – Winner of Art Fund Museum of the Year 2020

We are delighted to share the news that Gairloch Museum in Ross-Shire, which we fitted out last year with a full Exhibition and Visitor Experience, is one of five UK museums to have been recognised by the highly prestigious Art Fund with the accolade of Museum of the Year 2020.

It was an honour to deliver this contract; part of a £2.4million project to relocate the Gairloch Museum from its previous farm steading location into a transformed former cold war concrete bunker and anti-aircraft operations room.

Working with Exhibition designers Campbell & Co, who had planned with the Museum team a visionary new space over the building’s two storeys and central atrium, we delivered Setworks for six separate Exhibition Displays and co-ordinated (from the outset through to installation) Showcases, Graphics and Audio Visual interactives etc. We also created a new Reception, Cafe and Shop area as well as a temporary exhibition gallery and small film theatre.

The new Museum occupies an unusual, Grade I listed building which had last been used as a somewhat unsightly vehicle storage facility for the Highland Council’s roads department. However, as a thoroughly revitalised new venue, its displays now capture and celebrate the area’s heritage and culture from Pre-History, Geology, Crofting, Fishing and Whisky Distilling through to 20th Century War duties.

The former bunker and anti-aircraft operations building held great historical significance to the local community, which we were mindful of throughout the project works; respecting the cultural value of the building as well as the Museum’s collections. The Art Fund judges saw and acknowledged the impressive efforts of the local community in bringing the Museum to life; describing the project as a story of “rebirth, people-power and local pride….. thanks to the work of its more than 120 volunteers and the support of the community.”

We send our congratulations to the teams at Gairloch Museum and Campbell & Co on this prestigious award – well-deserved recognition of a truly unique and sustainable new landmark which is providing a community hub for the village of Gairloch.
