Our look ahead to 2021
It’s certainly been an eventful 2020 – the Museum & Heritage sector has faced some unprecedented challenges with closures due to COVID and the resulting loss of vital income. Many have received much-needed support from the Urgent Response Fund in Scotland and the UK Government’s Culture Recovery Fund, among others. Also, huge efforts have been made by museum staff and volunteers to make their spaces COVID-safe for visitors, putting hand sanitation stations, one-way-systems and social distancing measures in place.
We understood the need to revise our own operating procedures on site, in the factory and our offices to allow us back on site as soon as we got the green light. Fortunately, we went on to enjoy some successes completing a number of M&H and Visitor Experience Fit Outs across the UK this year.
We all hope 2021 is a much better year for everyone, certainly our team at Elmwood are now really looking forward to delivering some exciting new projects.
Here are just a few in the pipeline…
177 Bothwell Street
We’re delighted to be involved in the delivery of Glasgow’s largest new city centre Grade A office complex at 177 Bothwell St… uniquely designed for its occupants’ wellbeing, connectivity and sustainability complete with roof running track! Over 15 floors we’ll deliver high quality core fit outs for WCs plus accessible facilities, lockers & showers – incorporating luxury Porcelain Stone tiling and Corian splashbacks. Enhanced design features have also been incorporated to help make the building ‘touch-free’ through sensor technology – partly to simplify user experience, but also in light of the changing post-COVID world and the need for future-proofing.
This project will be an Interpretation Fit Out for Hylton Castle, which is a mediaeval gatehouse tower castle and a Grade I listed building and Scheduled Monument in Sunderland. As part of a £4.5m restoration and regeneration project for the whole castle structure, its facilities and gardens, we will be creating a series of exhibition spaces over multiple floors. Our works will include bespoke setworks with metalwork and glass elements, and subcontracted packages in AV Hardware, Interactives, Software & Graphics … all under the close watch of English Heritage and the client team.
The David Livingstone Centre
We will be delivering a brand new Exhibition Fit Out for the David Livingstone Centre at the former Blantyre Cotton Mill – Livingstone’s birthplace and the building where he was first employed at the age of ten. We’ll be delivering setwork displays, AV, lighting, showcases, graphics and interactives for the Museum’s unique collections, to help tell the inspirational story of this 19th century Physician, missionary and explorer of Africa. With its redevelopment, the Centre also aims to encourage inter-cultural activity and exchange of ideas to inspire individual and social transformation.
Coastal Forces Museum
This brand new Museum, part of the National Museum of the Royal Navy, will be located in Gosport, near Portsmouth, and will encompass a “Spitfires of the Sea” Exhibition displaying Naval memorabilia as well as two restored vintage launches. Our Fit Out works will comprise setworks, furniture and plinths, plus subcontracted packages including Graphics, Mount making, Lighting and Interactives.
