New Lanark is a former 18th- century mill and housing development which was one of the first planned industrial communities in the UK. The village still includes an untouched residential tenement, known as “Museum Stair”, the original interiors of which have been partially preserved. The innovative new exhibition explores what tenement life in New Lanark was like between 1881 and 1971, using interactives and recreated environments.
Our Fit out has created an immersive experience for visitors bringing together artefacts, oral histories and research to tell a compelling story about different residents and how they personalised their homes as their circumstances and times changed. Part of the visitor experience is an immersive show case with 360 degree projection of an audio visual experience and interactives. Over 180 different wallpapers were found in The Museum Stair and some of them have been brought back to life in this state of the art ‘immersive room’.
The project also included a full construction of the recreated front façade of the building including recessed doors and windows and patterned stonework treatment to walls. We were able to offer Value Engineering as part of our tendering and procurement processes by suggesting amendments to the sizes of installations plus alternative materials for the building frontage.
In the second exhibition space, Building Skills, visitors can learn about the vast array of people from masons, labourers, carpenters and tradespeople who have given their skills to the construction, conservation, modernisation and maintenance of New Lanark from the 18th century to the present day.
The Setworks created and installed for the project included walls, plinths and modular display units seamlessly integrated with suspended graphics and AV Hardware (including touchscreens and projectors).
“Elmwood Projects were a pleasure to work with, producing works to the highest standards and always professional in the management and overseeing of the works. We would have no hesitation in working with them again or recommending them to other clients.” - Real Studios, Designers of the New Lanark – Museum Stair Exhibition

“We had a great experience working with Elmwood on this project, the client was impressed with the standard of finishes and with Elmwood’s communication throughout the process. Our key contacts, Scott, George and Mark have all been a pleasure to deal with. We would be happy to recommend Elmwood to other clients in the future.”
